So I got sent to the dean today for wearing this top. My study tech teacher said that I was “exploiting” myself and that it could be a distraction to the other students. I got up out of my seat and told her that I wasn’t going to listen to her dress codes. In a way, she was being misogynist and slut shaming and I think that’s wrong. I will continue to wear what I want and nobody can tell me not to. The fact that womens bodies are sexualized and objectified so much angers me and that’s the reason why this happened. I’m going to wear what I want, how I want, when I want and that’s it.

I’m a guy. I can’t wear a shirt like this either, even though I’m not going to be wearing a bra. it’s dress code. It’s not slut shaming. You can’t show your bra like that at most jobs. why should you at school? Yes sexism is wrong and all that, but you can’t get ‘angry at the patriarchy” because you can’t show your undergarments in public. I’m not going to wear jeans with a rip in the side or the front that show off my flowery boxers, because that’s just not appropriate for school. Have some professionalism. You can wear whatever you like at home or with your friends or whatever, yes, but school prepares you for real life.

At work you can’t have this attitude of “I wear the fuck ever I want.” and expect to keep your job. School is the same way because it’s trying to teach you that lesson. That’s unrealistic; almost any job you get is going to have someone tell you what to wear or what to do because you work for them and you represent their company. If you don’t look the way they need you to look, that makes them look bad. A tattoo parlor probably isn’t going to hire someone who dresses like a nun and a top company isn’t going to hire someone who comes to work in a tank top that shows off her bra or a guy that shows off his ballsack.

You can’t blame patriarchy for this, I’m sorry. You can’t blame sexism for this. If I wore booty shorts and you could almost see my balls through my semi transparent flowery goddamn boxers, I would get in the same amount of trouble as you, and it’s within good reason.

FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS REAL LIFE.

The trouble is less the dress code and more the original poster being told she was “exploiting” herself and that she was a distraction to other students. THAT right there is a sexualization of the female body. I get told off for having my bra straps visible because my bra straps are two-inches wide; my clothing covers as much as shirts worn by flatter females, or by males, but I am told off because my genetics gave me large breasts, and my teachers have a problem with the supportive garments I need to wear. My breasts are just a part of my body; sexualizing a garment is the TEACHER’s problem.

The shirt that she photographs herself wearing COULD be worn by a male students, at least in the dozen highschools where I have spent a significant amount of time. It’s the bra, which the teacher sexualizes, that gets her written up.

Now, I don’t know if “slut-shaming” or “misogynistic” are the right terms, but sexualization of a mandatory garment is something that teachers should not do (because imagine the fuss if a girl had NOT worn a bra…).

I think we’ve found the reason why there are never Jews and Muslims in space…

I’ve always wondered how muslims in sci-fi settings go about praying toward mecca when they’re on the other side of the galaxy. I mean, do they need to be precise about facing mecca, or would it be ok as long as they were facing in the general direction? Because with the distances involved, if you’re facing just slightly the wrong way, you might be praying towards Alpha Centauri instead or something.

Maybe they’d invent some sort of compass that always points exactly towards Mecca.

I mean, from a Jewish perspective, if you were praying from the other side of the galaxy, it would be enough to pray towards Earth.

Just as when Jews around the world pray towards Jerusalem, it’s enough if you’re west of Jerusalem to pray facing East and if you’re east of Jerusalem West and so on. But really, you’re praying towards the Kotel (Western Wall) and not just towards Jerusalem and Jews in Jerusalem pray towards the wall.

So praying towards Earth, knowing that Jerusalem is in that direction, should be enough.

Maybe same with Mecca?

(All of these, are to my very much non-Jewish, non-Muslim, non-religious eye, reasonably positive/substantive? That is, the religious identity of a character/group of characters is important to who they are in a non-offensive/stereotypical way. But I might be missing something more subtle than I can detect.):

Hyperion, by Dan Simmons

The Last Colony, by John Scalzi (and I think the two books that come before it, too. I can’t recall if Islam or Judaism get mentioned specifically, but he makes a point of establishing that existing earth religions go out to the stars along with the rest of our culture.)

Ender’s Game/Shadow and Sequels. (I hesitate to put these here, because I’m almost positive they’ve got to be offensive to someone. Or possibly everyone. I’ve seriously soured on Orson Scott Card as a writer and human since I was in high school and read these.)

So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, “Wow, you’re so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if it’s okay for boys to do that. Now I’ll tell him there’s a cool guy who does it too!” It was a nice moment, very cute.

Then, last week, she came in again, and said, “Hey, I’m so glad you’re here! I want you to meet someone!” She then brings her son forward, and says, “Okay sweetie, show him what you did!” And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.

Guys, I’ve only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.

This time, though. This was a good cry.
